For patients who don’t want to think about wearing anything at all, a bonded retainer is a thin wire fixed behind the lower front teeth. It stays put 24 hours a day and does the holding work for you. It does mean flossing takes a little more attention, and we’ll show you how at the fitting.
Who Needs a Retainer and How Long You'll Wear It
Anyone who has finished braces or Invisalign needs a retainer. That part isn’t really negotiable. The teeth that just moved are the most likely to move again, and the first year after treatment is when the risk of relapse is highest.
For the first several months, most patients wear a removable retainer most of the day, taking it out only for meals and cleaning. After that, we usually transition to nighttime-only wear, which is the long-term routine for the rest of your life if you want the results to hold. It sounds like a lot up front, and then it becomes something you do without thinking, like wearing a watch to bed.
We also fit retainers for patients who never had braces but have noticed their teeth shifting with age, or who had orthodontic work decades ago and want to stop the gradual drift. What Happens at Your Retainer Appointment
Your first visit for a retainer is short and uneventful, which is the point. Dr. Palmer will look at your bite, check how your teeth are sitting now compared to where they ended up after orthodontic treatment, and talk with you about which style of retainer makes sense.
We take impressions of your upper and lower arches, send them to the lab, and have your retainer ready within a couple of weeks. When it comes in, you’ll come back for a fitting, we’ll check that it seats correctly without pressure points, and we’ll walk through wear schedule, cleaning, and what to do if it cracks or gets lost. You’ll get a case. Use it. The single most common way retainers disappear is being wrapped in a napkin at a restaurant.
